USA Diversity Visa Lottery Registration Now Open

Every year, the Green Card Lottery gives 50,000 people worldwide the opportunity to immigrate to the United States without having to have exceptional qualifications, US relatives, or a workplace in the United States.

The program, also known as the “green card lottery,” was established in 1990 to increase diversity in the United States.  Anyone who meets the relatively low entry requirements imposed by the US authorities can get a chance to win the lottery with just a few simple steps. The drawing of the winners takes place every year between May and June and is organized by the US government.

Entering the Diversity Visa lottery involves filling out a simple form online, and it doesn’t cost anything. You can enter the lottery every year from early October through early November. The winners are selected at random by a computer, and they and their immediate families receive green cards.

The State Department will begin accepting online registrations for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 Diversity Visa (DV) lottery starting Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at noon EDT. Foreign nationals who wish to enter the lottery have until Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at noon EST to file online.

For FY 2023, the DV lottery program will make up to 55,000 green card numbers available through random selection. FY 2023 lottery results will be announced in May 2022. Foreign nationals selected in the FY 2023 lottery can submit their green card applications starting on October 1, 2022.

Who Is Eligible for the Diversity Visa?

Country of birth

In order to qualify for the Diversity Visa, you must have been born in a country that sent less than 50,000 immigrants to the United States over the past 5 years. There is some yearly variation in the countries that are eligible, but Canada, China, India, Mexico, and the United Kingdom never make the list, because these countries all send a large number of immigrants to the United States.

If your native country is not eligible, there are still two ways you could qualify for the Diversity Visa:

If your spouse was born in an eligible country, you can apply with your spouse and choose your spouse’s birth country on your application.
If neither of your parents were legal residents in your own country of birth, you can choose your mother or father’s country of birth.

Education

The second major requirement for Diversity Visa applicants is that you must have at least a high school degree, or at least two years of work experience within the past five years in a profession that requires at least two years of training, as determined by the U.S. Department of Labor.

How can I participate in the Green Card Lottery?

To enter the lottery, all you have to do is fill out a simple form online at dvprogram.state.gov. Registration closes on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at noon. The State Department recommends applying sooner rather than later since high demand could cause website delays.

Selection and Notification

The winners of the Diversity Visa lottery are chosen at random by a computer program, with a certain number of visas allocated to each region of the world and no one country receiving more than 7 per cent of the Diversity Visas available in any given year.

Although the exact dates vary, people who have entered the Diversity Visa lottery can check the status of their application beginning in early May the year following their application, by using the Entrant Status Check link on the Diversity Visa webpage.
